Safety for Cell Phones
In our last blog, we discussed some general guidelines to keep our cell phones as well as our selves and our children safe. Now, one of the many conveniences that are allowed us by our cell phones is the convenience of being able to communicate with anyone, any time and anywhere we or they are. While many lives had been saved by simple 911 calls during accidents on the road, on mountain trails or other inconvenient places, this convenience have also been abused like that teenage girl whose cell phone keeps on ringing while you’re trying to enjoy a movie. Or how about that young executive who keeps on screaming on his phone about a presentation while you quietly commute to work? Now, there are laws in many countries around the world that actually ban talking on your mobile while driving a car because of the many accidents and even deaths that it has caused. So here are a few safety tips that you can also share with your children and family when using their cell phones while on the go.
- Always respect others. While you can use your mobile phone to call anyone from almost anywhere, be respectful of others when using your mobile phone in public. Avoid answering your cell phone when a movie, a play or a meeting is ongoing or simply excuse yourself and go outside. Keep your ring tone in silent mode or better yet, turn your phone off.
- Don’t text and walk. If you are looking at your phone, this means that you are not looking at where you are going.
- In the same case, when you need to send an SMS or make a call while driving, either pull your car over or put texting or calling off until later to avoid accidents. When you are engaged in a conversation or trying to compose a message, your concentration is not a hundred percent on driving and this may cause accidents.
- If you are expecting a call while travelling, put your phone in an accessible place and let your voice mail answer the call so you can answer the it at a more convenient time.
- Be familiar with emergency numbers like 911 or your doctor’s especially when you have a special condition. Or if you see a crime ongoing or an accident on the road, you can use your phone to ask for help. Your phone might just be the greatest gadget to be invented that could save your life and that of other’s.
Being mobile and on the go does not mean that we have to forget our manners and common sense. People go to the theaters to watch a movie or a play and not to listen to your latest gossip. Like the Internet, the use of the cell phone is also covered by etiquette or a set of rules for good manners. When walking or driving, your full attention is needed and using the cell phone while doing either compromises your concentration and may cause accidents. Putting the call off is just a minor inconvenience that may save your life or that of others.
