More Than Fiction: Hazard Potential of Mobile Phone Radiation – What Should You Know!
Since the introduction of mobile phones to the public market, its production, upgrade and consumption of both goods and services have never stopped. Everyday, more and new applications were created and developed to ensure costumer satisfaction and at the same time persuade them to use their phones as frequent as possible.
The basic mechanism of mobile phone communication is similar to the mechanism of a radio. Voice signals are transmitted from one mobile into another via radio frequencies. Radio frequencies are waves by nature.
The cancer causing potential of mobile phone radio waves have been the topic of so many series of researches on nuclear biochemistry. Contrary to the common belief, the radiation from mobile phone is too weak to neither heat biological tissues nor break chemical bonds in the molecules of the cell.
However, recent studies show that exposure to radiation from mobile phones causes alterations and aberrations in the expression of human proteins. Several independent studies around the world have confirmed these findings already.
Dariusz Leszczynski of the Finish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority says “Our study suggests that it is possible that mobile phone radiation alters the expression of some proteins in living humans.”
The European union funded a study and claimed conclusively that the radiation emitted by mobile phones and power lines can effect the living human cells at energy levels generally considered harmless. Its Project Leader Franz Adlkofer of Verum Foundation explains their finding and said that electromagnetic radiation of low and high frequencies is able to generate a genotoxic effect on certain but not all types of cells and is also able to change the function of certain genes by either activating or deactivating them.
On the other hand, the World health Organization in Geneva questions the validity of the results by pointing out the standardization of the experiments. He also pointed out that in one experiment, two groups reported that low frequency radiation could produce double stranded breaks in DNA, something that most of the scientific community considered impossible, while another group has the opposite results. He further says that in this status, one has to question what and who went wrong for them to get the results they claim.
At the end of the day, the dispute whether mobile phone radiation has danger potential, can not be concluded by all these researches. Off course, we cannot stop using mobile phones because they are the modern day necessity. The only thing left for us to take a little precautionary measure to ensure that we lessen our exposures to such radio frequencies.
Almost all mobile phones whether analog or smartphone, comes with built in features that we can utilize for this purpose.
(1) Mobile phones emit most of the radiation when attempting to connect a call. So when making a call, allow the phone to connect first before placing it on your ears.
(2) Hands-free mode your mobile phones if available and possible. In this way, your body is at a distance from the mobile phone. This prevents direct exposure to the antenna which is the source of radiation.
(3) Use Mobile devices such as wired or wireless speaker and headset when making a call.
Here are the top 10 smartphones with high hazard potential. This list is based on the comprehensive report made by the Environmental Working Group.
- T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (1.55 W/kg)
- Blackberry Curve 8330 (1.54 W/kg)
- Palm Treo 600 (1.53 W/kg)
- T-Mobile Shadow (1.53 W/kg)
- Palm Treo 650 (1.51 W/kg)
- Blackberry Curve 8300 (1.51 W/kg)
- Blackberry Bold 9000 (1.51 W/kg)
- Sony Ericsson P910a (1.50 W/kg)
- HTC SMT 5800 (1.49 W/kg)
- BlackBerry Pearl 8120/8130 (1.48 W/kg)
Suprisingly, these are the most known and used smartphones in the globe. We are lucky enough they come with speaker and headset accessories.
