AT&T’s Nokia E71x: A Review

att nokia e71x AT&T’s Nokia E71x: A ReviewThe Nokia E71x cell phone is AT&T’s tweaked version of Nokia E71 and at 10mm thick, it’s about its slimmest smart phone yet.  With a full QWERTY keypad, built-in WiFi, 3.2 megapixel camera/camcorder, HSDPA, Bluetooth and Symbian (S60 Ver. 3.2) OS, it could prove to be the closest competition to Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s Blackberry.  It could also be the cheapest smart phone at just $99.99 with a 2-year locked in period with AT&T.

Nokia E71x Cell Phone Features:

Now, let’s look at the phone more closely.

On the outside: The Nokia E71x cell phone measures 4.5 x 2.2 x 0.4 inches in size and  has an all-black, all-steel exterior that scores high on sex appeal.  It’s also sturdy and durable.  Its screen measures 2.4-inch (320 x 240 pixels), not the widest but nonetheless, it doesn’t disappoint – the display is as sharp and as clear as they come.

The Nokia E71x has a full QWERTY pad with four shortcut keys to access home/ calendar/ contacts/ mail directly.  Some people found the keypad too small or too close together but it’s easy to adapt to after a few tries.  Its textured feel, with that slight bump in the middle of the keys, makes it much easier to aim at after a while.

The non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack instead of the usual 3.5mm could be a real bummer for some.  However, there are adapters that could be bought so you can still use that headphone you have.  Or try going wireless – it could be fun.

As published, the E71x has a 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery which should give about 5 hours of talk time and up to 20.8 days of standby time.  However, this depends on how much you use the phone for calls, emails, connecting to WiFi, listening to music, taking pictures, playing games, etc. (you can really do this much with cell phones these days).  So some people listed anywhere between two hours up to two days before charging.

The Nokia E71x’s WiFi (802.11 b/g) can be used for accessing open networks at work, at home and even on the road from a variety of wireless hotspots.  So instead of using the phone’s GPS (through AT&T navigator), you could download a Nokia navigator or google maps for free rather than paying for a data plan.

Speaking of the Nokia E71x as a cell phone, it comes with excellent call quality, a dropped call now and then, but still, the calls come in really clear.  Text messaging is also made more efficient because of Nokia’s predictive text function.

Nokia E71x Cell Phone, In Conclusion:

The Nokia E71x cell phones are almost the same as the Nokia E71 and as said earlier, it could give the more popular iPhone and Blackberry some competition – and it does not even have a touch screen.  At an attractive price tag of $99, it’s practically a bargain for a smart phone.  It’s sleek and slim with all these hi-technology features and applications and enough support from both Nokia and AT&T for maximum usage.  The iPhone or even the Blackberry may be more fun than the Nokia E71x but, hey, with such a price tag, the deal is not bad, not bad at all.
