The HTC Touch Pro is probably the smallest touch screen smart phone available today. The handset measures a petite 3.9 inches long by 2.8 inches wide by 0.5 inch tall and weighs just 3.98 ounces. It is very similar in size to the Nokia N95, which fits nicely in the palm of your hand and could be easily put inside a bag or pants pocket.  The phone feels quite heavy though but still well made with a lovely quality feel. It sports a Qualcomm MSM7201A™ processor which runs at 528MHz, 512MB ROM (with 287MB accessible), 288MB RAM (with 188MB accessible), and has a microSD/HC expansion slot for added memory.

The HTC Touch Pro’s screen measures 2.8 inches diagonally and displays 65,536 colors at a 240×320 pixel resolution. Nothing really new or revolutionary there, but what sets the screen apart from other smart phones is the TouchFLO technology behind it which allows you to operate certain portions of the smart phone with a series of finger swipes or taps. To complement this functionality, HTC also made some interface and menu changes so you can more easily access your messages, applications, and other important information.  HTC Touch Pro’s screen is TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive with VGA resolution, making for a pixel density of 259ppi (the Touch Diamond’s screen is 285ppi, the Touch Diamond2’s screen is 292ppi, and the iPhone’s screen is 164ppi). What’s also cool about it is that the screen is smart enough to distinguish the difference between a tap and a finger sweep. This comes in handy when scrolling through email or through the Web. It’s a quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) phone with dualband UMTS (900/2100) with HSDPA and HSUPA. It also has assisted GPS, WiFi b & g, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, USB 2.0, a proximity sensor, and an accelerometer for screen rotations in Opera Mobile and while viewing the photo gallery. The camera at the back is 3.2MP with auto focus but no flash, and the camera in front for video calls has VGA resolution. Powering all of this is a rechargeable Lithium-ion or Lithium-ion polymer 1340mAh battery.

For input, the HTC Touch Pro has a slide out QWERTY keyboard as well as an onscreen virtual keyboard. Yes, the Touch Pro is not made as a messaging machine like the Blackberry but many found both keyboards to be a bit cramped.  The stylus for the virtual keyboard helps but it feels more like pecking rather than typing so it’s not cool that way.

So all those specs could be a mouthful but at the bottom line of this is that with the HTC Touch Pro, what you have is still a Windows Mobile smart phone, running the latest Windows Mobile 6 Professional Edition.  So if you’re a big fan of Window’s Mobile, you’ll still have Windows Live, Google Maps, Office and Opera 9.5. The HTC YouTube application is also there but many found it very slow, even on WiFi. Compared to the Diamond, there is nothing new inside the Touch Pro except for an on-screen tilt sensor calibrating tool.  You could probably use this when using the GPS while driving in your car, to keep the image steady.

In conclusion, the Diamond and HTC Touch Pro are still the best Windows Mobile devices out there now.
This could be because of the TouchFlo 3D interface which makes the device fast and slick especially for email, phone and web – that is, until you start using the non-3D interface for Windows Mobile and the device becomes slow and clunky.

HTC’s Diamond and Touch Pro are still your best bets out there when looking for a slick interface that runs on Windows Mobile. With these two devices, you will get the applications written for Windows Mobile as well as a smartphone with a slick interface. It has amazing features, good battery life, the camera takes okay pictures, it also has WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.
