Free Palm Treo Pro
The Palm Treo Pro is a fine addition to the range of professional-minded cell devices. Loaded with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional software, the Treo easily handles several Microsoft Office projects. Even better – the Palm Treo Pro comes standard with many media and browsing applications. A nice, well-rounded package of both professional and entertainment capabilities, the Palm Treo Pro is a great product for the price.
Basics
With a glossy black shell, we were impressed by the look of the Palm Treo Pro. The phone is slim and sleek. The Palm is tiny, too; only 0.5 inches thick, it measures 114×60x13 mm, and weighs only 4.7 ounces.
The Palm Treo Pro has a 3.5 mm jack so you can plug in your ear buds. Behind the smooth cover, you can find the microSD/SDHC card slot and removable battery. The Treo Pro’s microSD expansion slot accepts up to 16GB cards.
The TFT Touchscreen was vivid and bright – 65K colors are represented in the graphics. However, at only 2.5 inches, we found the Treo’s touchscreen to be a little small.
With a full QWERTY keyboard, the Palm Treo Pro makes text messaging easy. Our one complaint is that the keyboard keys were packed a little too close together.
The Palm Treo Pro features 100MB of shared memory and 128 MB of RAM, easily matching competitor devices on the market. With a speakerphone, speed dial, smart dialing, conference calling, and threaded text and multimedia messaging, the device offers all the basics.
The contacts section was perfect. It allows you to save multiple numbers, email addresses, instant-messaging IDs, and birthdays. You can also get directions or map an address from someone’s contact information.
With a rated talk time of 5 hours, you will need to plug in your phone after a long-winded, late night chat session. We didn’t find this talk time to be an inconvenience, though.
Software
The Palm Treo comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, which carries Office Mobile. With Office Mobile, you can create Word and Excel mobile documents. Office Mobile also allows you to edit PowerPoint presentations. Microsoft’s Office Mobile Suite gives you the capability to use the OneNote Mobile service, and standard personal information management (PIM) tools like a calendar, contacts, and a task list. The Windows Mobile operating system has plenty of third-party applications available for download, such as business applications, games, or other PIM utilities.
The Palm Treo’s email capabilities are second to none. Preinstalled on the phone, Microsoft ActiveSync will allow you to synchronize your Outlook information. Office Mobile supports Microsoft Exchange push e-mail, along with POP/IMAP accounts or delivery from providers such as AOL, EarthLink, Gmail, and Yahoo.
Bluetooth 2.0 is available for use with headsets, hands-free kits, object exchange, and dial-up networking.
Media Capabilities
The Palm Treo relies on Sprint’s 3G EV-DO network for internet access. Using Internet Explorer Mobile 6, the Sprint network will load webpages in approximately 6 seconds. If you choose to use the desktop instead with Wi-Fi, pages load in about a minute. We found this minute to be a bit too long to wait.
Sprint has bundled Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store; you can download your favorite shows or mp3s. The music and TV services come with Sprint’s Power Vision pack which is available for $15-$25 per month. With Sprint TV, you can access programming from channels such as CNN, Comedy Central, and Sprint Exclusive Entertainment. Live-streaming music can be heard through Sirius, VH1 Mobile, and MTV Mobile. The Sprint Music Store songs cost $0.99 each.
The Palm Treo supports formats including AAC, MP3, WAV, WMA, MPEG-4, and WMV. We found the sound quality to be very good; our ear buds picked up resonance and tone well.
Camera / Video![]()
The Palm Treo features a nice, standard 2 MP camera with 1600×1200 pixels. The camera comes with 8x zoom and video recording. You can choose to shoot your pictures in one of five resolution settings and one of four quality settings. The camera also offers effects, white balance, and brightness controls. We were impressed that the Palm Treo’s camera also offers a self-timer and a time stamp feature.
As far as recording videos, you can choose one of four resolutions, and can adjust the image using white balance, brightness settings, and effects. There is no limit to your video recording length – a big plus.
Overall, we are impressed by the professional and entertainment features offered by the Palm Treo Pro. We highly recommend the device, and feel it will suit the professional user’s needs.
