Best of Web Review: The Verizon Samsung Omnia Free Cell Phone
The Samsung Omnia is one of the free Verizon camera phones available for new subscribers, and it sure does have a ton of features to make it a frontrunner among other best free cell phone models. With a gorgeous look, high-resolution camera, and integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, the Omnia offers exactly what every mobile user desires.
We uncover the best and the worst of the Omnia, and let you know what you need in order to choose this mobile device as your next top free cell phone.
First, the Omnia has a high-tech, seamless look about it; we thought it was definitely a prettier mobile device compared to the Blackberry Storm. The Omnia has a large 3.2 inch touchscreen that makes up the majority of the smartphone’s face; with a 262,000 color output and 240×400 pixel resolution the Omnia displays images clearly and beautifully. Free net books can be easily viewed using this display, which shows every detail onscreen.
We have to admit that the onscreen keyboard is a bit cramped. We should mention, however, that the Omnia offers haptic feedback, which means that each action you take will be confirmed with a slight vibration. We applaud Samsung on this feature, as it makes it easy for us to determine when we’ve made a text messaging mistake.
Samsung’s great TouchWiz user interface is a huge highlight of the Omnia model. TouchWiz basically allows you to customize your phone with different widgets. You can choose the widgets you want from the left side of the touchscreen, and drag and drop them into the main screen so that they are easily accessible. 16 different widgets are available for you to choose from, including messages, wireless manager, contacts, calendar, games, and multimedia. Basically, you get to determine what your priorities are when using your mobile device. Samsung gets major props for realizing that this is important to us. Who wants a bunch of applications on your first menu that you don’t ever use?
Verizon sends the Omnia with an AC adapter, stylus, USB cable, a 3.5 mm/FM radio antenna, a 2.5 mm headset adapter, software CDs, and a reference booklet. We’ve had poor experiences recently with wireless carriers not sending a headset adapter, so we were a bit relieved when the Omnia came with its own.
The Omnia offers many traditional core functions, including a speakerphone, conference calling, speed dial, voice dialing and commands, and text and multimedia messaging. We were pleased that it also offers visual voice mail. Unfortunately, the Omnia’s address book is limited by its available memory (you can’t add in another chip for more address book info).
Complete with Bluetooth 2.0, the Omnia is ready to use with mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets as well as hands-free kits, object push for vCard, basic imaging, phonebook access profiles, an dial-up networking. Omnia also has DUN capabilities; meaning that you can use it as a wireless modem for your laptop if you purchase Verizon’s BroadBand Access plan for this feature.
If you live in the right coverage area, the Samsung Omnia works on Verizon’s EV-DO Rev. A network, which ensures you will download and upload information at incredibly fast speeds (your upload speed may increase up to 400%!). Check and make sure that you have this capability by visiting Verizon’s web site and viewing their coverage map.
In addition to its 3G capabilities, the Omnia offers integrated Wi-Fi – another great option to help you connect to the web. We loved that the Omnia comes with the Opera mobile web browser – for those of you that can’t stand Internet Explorer Mobile, Omnia gives you another choice. Opera allows you to open several tabs, zoom in on pages by double-tapping, bookmark sites, and much more.
