I frequent my local coffee shop everyday after work as a way to relax before going home and dealing with my second job, taking care of my family.  I’ll sit outside on their patio with a few friends and enjoy a nice ice coffee on a warm day and exchange stories with my buddies.  It’s a little noisy out there sometimes.  The usual combination of garbage trucks emptying the McDonald’s dumpster across the street and teenagers smoking and yelling at each other.  We can block these things out and continue with our conversations.  That is until “they” arrive.  You know, the type you can see coming from a mile away.  Their phone glued to the side of their hide and the incessant babbling.  I’m talking about people talking on cell phones.  There’s something that just bugs us when someone is sitting right in front of us chatting away on their phone.  Well scientist have recently done a study and figured out what that something is.

Cornell University studies call it “halfalogue”. The phenomenon of only hearing one side of a story can drive us absolutely mad.  Our brains are used to two-sided conversations and hearing half of a conversation is a distraction as it draws our attention as our brain is trying to make sense of the other half of the conversation.  Besides being an annoyance additional studies are being done to show its affects on drivers in the presence of someone speaking on a cell phone.

I really don’t care to here about how someone’s colonoscopy went or whether or not someone is cheating on someone else, but your brain is basically forced to eavesdrop on other peoples cell phone conversations and it really is a buzz kill when you’re trying to relax and enjoy the rest of your day, but what can you do when theirs millions of Americans walking around in mid conversation?
